Len Graham is one of Ireland's best and most popular traditional singers. On his first Claddagh record he sings fourteen songs from the northern tradition of which he is a part. Len learned his songs from the older singers who had them unassisted by records or radio. Each of Len's records is an essential part of any collection of songs and singing.

Sarah Vaughan possessed a voice with a remarkably broad range; and her audiences loved her for this wherever she went to perform. Sarah enjoyed challenges, too; on this CD she performs both "Autumn In New York" and "Moonlight In Vermont" in full range. Sarah makes it sound easy; but we know it really isn't quite that simple to sing the way Sarah sang. We are all better off for Sarah's sharing her talents with us on great albums like this one.

In 1995 a few folkies started the band Et encore. Irish traditionals and popular folksongs indicated clearly a band with a great live reputation. In 1997 they decided to play folkrock and wrote plenty of songs by themselves. They played lot of gigs in Belgium on different occassions. They sing most of the time in English and they released their first album: "not a full box of smarties" in the summer of 2000.

The songs are in English and Frisian. Frisian (or Frys) is the closest extant language to English, and is apparently a lot like Middle English. Frisians are a fiercely proud and traditionally discriminated against minority in the Netherlands, although lately Frisian is becoming cool and trendy, even in the southern part of the country. Twarres strengths are their lovely vocal harmonies and their haunting, melancholic lyrics.

Surette’s Celtic solo guitar material has been acclaimed in the acoustic guitar world, with his playing compared favorably with influential greats such as John Renbourn and Pierre Bensusan. This all-instrumental, all solo guitar disc is made up of first-rate arrangements of traditional tunes from Ireland, Brittany, France, and New England, along with several of Surette’s own traditionally-influenced compositions.

Joseph Allard was born in Woodland (Québec) and finally settled in Ville St.-Pierre near Montréal after having lived in New England from 1889 to 1917. He recorded many 78s and his tunes have become classics among Québec fiddlers.

The Jing Ying Soloists consists of five Chinese musicians who play the erhu (fiddle), di-zi (bamboo flute), pipa (lute), yang-quin (hammer dulcimer), and percussion. They play as an ensemble on about a third of the tracks; the rest of the time they play one or two at a time. They perform traditional and modern folk music with drama and style. Especially impressive is "Night," with its thundering percussion solos, and "Shenpadei Folksong," whose skillful yang-quin playing sounded remarkably like a piano. Near the end of the album Lam Si Kwam gives us a thrilling imitation of a bird on the di-zi. All the tracks are at least pretty; however, a few are a trifle sedate. Recommended for anyone interested in exploring Chinese music.
